 violence on Black and Brown communities, resist racial profiling during the 
 police-sponsored National Night out!\n\nTo create genuine safety we need to 
 build community without racist police and prioritize human life over 
 private property!\n\nGather outside Lakeview Library at MacArthur and Grand 
 in Oakland. 6pm on Tuesday, August 6th. From there, we'll visit some NNO

 info:\n\nNational Night Out is a pro-policing event that is created to 
 build and strengthen Neighborhood Watch chapters around the country. It is 
 nationally coordinated between city governments and police departments to 
 support the exact type of program that enabled George Zimmerman to take the 
 life of Trayvon Martin. The court decision to clear Zimmerman of any charge 
 reaffirms that, even though he is not a cop, Zimmerman was doing the 
 police's job. He was reinforcing a system of power that thrives by 
 devaluing Black and Brown lives. \n\nNational Night Out supports the murder 
 of Trayvon Martin, and while Sanford, Florida, may feel far away, the exact 
 same relationships exist right here in Oakland - with wealthier 
 neighborhoods building up Neighborhood Watch programs by fear mongering 
 about poor, Black and Brown people. \n\nWe understand that wealthier people 
 in Oakland feel scared when harm and/or violence reaches their doorsteps, 
 but rather than challenging the causes of those harms, National Night Out, 
 Neighborhood Watch, private security and racist vigilantism extends 
 violence by taking resources from already under-resourced communities, and 
 devalues Black and Brown lives. \n\nMoreover, those strategies support the 
 governing systems that accept the killings of Black and Brown people - 
 which we recognize through the killings of Emmett Till, Rodney King, Oscar 
 Grant or Trayvon Martin.\n
