DESCRIPTION:What are you doing on July 4th at 11:00 A.M.?\nHow about going to UN Plaza
 at Civic Center for
 this:\n\nhttps://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2013/07/restore-fourth-campaign-organizes-protests-against-unconstitutional-surveillance\n\nElectronic
Frontier Foundation\nDefending your rights in the digital world\n\nRestore
the Fourth Campaign Organizes Protests Against\nUnconstitutional
Surveillance\n\nThe right of the people to be secure in their persons,
houses, papers,\nand effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures,
shall not be\nviolated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable
cause,\nsupported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing
the\nplace to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.\n\n-
Fourth Amendment, US Constitution\n\nThis Fourth of July, groups of
concerned individuals will be taking to\nthe streets in dozens of cities
across the United States in support of\nthe Fourth Amendment. According to
the official website, Restore the\nFourth aims to end all forms of
unconstitutional surveillance of\ndigital communications by the United
States government. The campaign\ncalls particular attention to PRISM, a
recently-revealed project of\nthe National Security Agency that allows the
government broad access\nto the Internet traffic and other electronic
communications of many\nusers – including many Americans. The Restore the
Fourth movement has\nan active reddit community that is working
cooperatively to organize\nprotests across the country.\n\nThere are many
ways to protest unconstitutional surveillance –\nincluding signing onto
the Stop Watching Us site and calling your\nelected officials – but
physical protests can be particularly\neffective at demonstrating public
outrage. We’re glad to see the\nRestore the Fourth movement organizing
protests across the country\nagainst unlawful NSA spying, and we hope these
protests push elected\nofficials to respond to the American people’s
growing discontent with\ndragnet domestic surveillance.\n\nOn the officials
website, the Restore the Fourth movement asserts that\nthe National
Security Agency’s dragnet surveillance is an affront to\nthe public –
even if individuals have nothing in particular to hide.\nIt notes that,
"Privacy is not an admission of guilt...The average\nperson expects privacy
in many situations, including but not limited\nto using the bathroom,
writing a diary, or going on a date with a\nspouse. A reasonable
expectation of privacy exists in such situations\nbecause the events
occurring are personal, intimate, and not the\nbusiness of any other party,
government or otherwise." The site also\nquestions whether programs such as
PRISM are effective or even useful\nin stopping terrorist attacks, noting,
"there is little to no evidence\nof any terrorist attacks that have
directly been foiled as a result of\nPRISM."\n\nThe campaign is a
non-partisan, grassroots movement not directly\naffiliated with any
nonprofit. However, the campaign has committed to\nstanding with EFF and
the rest of the Stop Watching Us coalition in\ndemanding transparency and
meaningful reform to domestic surveillance\nprograms.\n\nEFF is sending a
representative to the San Francisco protest; please\nstop by Civic Center
at 11 AM on July 4th to pick up EFF stickers,\nhear us talk about the
issues with dragnet surveillance, and show your\nopposition to the NSA’s
unconstitutional spying program.\n\nCheck out the list of planned protests.
The site also lists several\nlocations where rallies have not yet been
organized. If there is no\nevent planned for your own city, you can set one
up and tell the\nRestore the Fourth organizers. And if you are planning a
protest,\ncheck out the Bill of Rights Defense Committee's guide to
protesting\nNSA surveillance.\n\nNumerous websites (including EFF) are
planning to show solidarity for\nthis grassroots movement by displaying the
Fourth Amendment on our\nhomepage on July 4th. We’ll have an embeddable
graphic available soon;\ncheck back in the next couple days.\n\n\n\n
