DESCRIPTION:North Korea and the Global Struggle for Socialism\n\nWhen Che Guevara
visited North Korea in the 1960s, he considered it to be an inspiration for
Cuba and revolutionaries everywhere. Since the overthrow of the Soviet
Union, North Korea has experienced not only the death of Kim Il Sung, but a
series of natural disasters which left it impoverished and struggling to
feed its people. Critics label it an Orwellian-Stalinist-Oriental
nightmare. Do we dare call it socialist? The answer to this question
reveals much about how we view socialism and the struggle to build a
communist future for humanity. Open discussion will follow a presentation
by Gene Ruyle, Emeritus Professor of Anthropology and Asian Studies, CSU,
Long Beach. For background, see Ruyle’s paper of the same title
 at\nhttp://www.csulb.edu/~eruyle/Korea-socialism-LATEST.pdf\n\nSunday, May
