DESCRIPTION:Racism and oppression are alive and well in the United States. From the
attempts of politicians to rob Afro-Americans of their voting rights to the
overflowing prisons that entrap millions and the epidemic of police murder
that has claimed the lives of Oscar Grant, Sean Bell and Alan Blueford; the
New Jim Crow is out of control.\n\nIn celebration of what would have been
his 88th birthday, the International Socialist Organization will host a
discussion on the revolutionary ideas of Malcolm X. \n\nFrom his legacy of
struggle against racism to his firm belief in the right of the oppressed to
self-defense, and his internationalism, Malcolm X still has much to offer a
new generation.\n\nSpeakers: \nBrian Jones is an educator, actor and
activist in New York City. Brian co-narrated the film, The Inconvenient
Truth Behind Waiting for Superman and contributed to the book, Education
and Capitalism: Struggles for Learning and Liberation. His commentary and
writing have appeared on MSNBC.com, Democracy Now!, The Huffington Post,
GritTV and SocialistWorker.org. Brian has also lent his voice to several
audiobooks, including, The John Carlos Story: The Sports Moment That
Changed the World and Howard Zinn's one-man play Marx in Soho. Brian was
recently awarded a Lannan Cultural Freedom Fellowship.\n\nSpecial Guest
speaker Jeralynn Blueford - mother of Alan Blueford, murdered by OPD and
co-founder of the Justice for Alan Blueford (JAB) committee. \n
