DESCRIPTION:Writer Michelle Cordova of La Oferta Newspaper and boardmember of San Jose
Peace & Justice Center speaks on the recent news of selling the Amazon to
Chinese oil companies in Ecuador.\n\nDescription of Talk:\nEcuador is the
most biodiverse nation in the world. The Amazon rainforest is home to nine
different native nationalities, some of whom have no contact with
civilization. They have taught Ecuadorians the importance of nature, and
are the reason why Ecuador became the first country in the world to
recognize the law of the Rights of Nature or Ecosystem Rights.\n\nHowever
now the Ecuadorian government is promoting five mega mining projects and is
planning the auction off 3 million hectares or half of the rainforest (one
third of the country) to Chinese oil firms that will devastate the
environment and native communities.Seven nationalities in the Ecuadorian
Amazon have issued a declaration denouncing the proposed auction while
neighbor countries are declaring an environmental state of
emergency.\n\nSuggested Donation $5-10 (no one turned away for lack of
funds)\n\nSponsored by San Jose Peace and Justice Center\n
