DESCRIPTION:QuiltWorks Collaborative is holding a ribbon-cutting event at its
headquarters in San Francisco's Visitation Valley to introduce its services
and facilities to local quilters, fiber artists, DIY-ers, volunteers,
philanthropists, community members, and other interested organizations.
\n\nThe ceremony will be open to the public and will feature remarks by
founder, Linda Hannawalt, and other San Francisco community and nonprofit
leaders. The event will kick off a weekend of festivities, including
trainings open to the public. QuiltWorks Collaborative will also offer
tours of its 3,800 square foot facilities, in which one volunteer
explained, "every space, every last inch, is filled with fabric."
\n\nQuiltWorks operates through three distinct programs - QuiltWorks studio
and training facility, Thriftstitch discount fabric store, and FABSF
entrepreneur center and gallery-to bring together, train, and empower local
community members to secure their own standard of living and to give back
to other San Franciscans in need. \n\nLocated just off of Route 101, the
QuiltWorks Collaborative is easy to find with plenty of free parking, and
it is easily accessible by public transportation.\n\nThe QuiltWorks
Collaborative is wheelchair accessible. \n\nThe recession and recent
budget cuts have increased the demand for services targeted to San
Francisco's most vulnerable populations. Understanding the dedication and
talent of the quilting community, which consists of over 27 million people
nationwide, QuiltWorks Collaborative works with Bay Area quilters, sewers,
and DIY-ers to create handcrafted quilts, wheelchair quilts, preemie
quilts, and pillowcases to comfort those in Bay Area hospitals, cancer
centers, and women's shelters. \n\nThrough the training and resources
provided by the QuiltWorks Collaborative, low-income, unemployed,
underemployed, youth, and seniors can uncover a new means of supplementing
their income and securing a more sustainable standard of living.\n
