DESCRIPTION:City Hall Must Take Action to Save City College\nMass Rally Demanding City
Govt. Help SF City College.\nThursday, March 14, 4-6 PM\nSF City Hall
Steps\nPolk Street Side\n\nSan Francisco City Government needs to help City
College of San Francisco continue as a vibrant COMMUNITY College. City
College is under threat from a private Accrediting Commission and the
state-wide California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office. Outside
manipulation of City College’s affairs has gotten to the point of
diverting $14 million in City Proposition A revenue that SF voters approved
by a 73% margin to save City College classes, programs, teachers, and
staff. It’s time for San Francisco City Government to step in!\n\nCity
College of San Francisco (CCSF) is a great Community College. The NY Times
says it’s the 11th top Community College in the nation. It helps
students complete their GEDs, prepares students to transfer to 4-year
colleges, and graduates students in the fields of food preparation,
nursing, radiology, fire fighting, and many other fields. Thousands of
immigrants learn English, older adults take special courses, unemployed
workers learn new skills – the list goes on.\n\nBut City College is under
severe threat, not of closing, but of losing its accreditation unless it
bows to the private Accrediting Commission’s demands to narrow its
mission down to full-time students planning to transfer to four-year
colleges or in vocational certificate programs. No low-income students
working while studying, no Lifelong Learning programs for older adults, no
Diversity programs specializing in communities of color, no programs for
people with disabilities - - in short, no Community in Community Colleges.
The state-wide California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office wants to
impose this on ALL California Community Colleges, but is starting its
attack on San Francisco’s Community College because it’s the biggest
and most successful as an inclusive Community College.\n\nSan Francisco
City Government needs to:\n\n1) Spend Prop A funds as 73% of voters
intended,\n\n2) Intervene to make sure Prop A is followed, since the CCSF
Trustees won’t do it.\n\n3) Issue a bridge loan until Prop A and Prop
30 funds arrive, or better yet to dip into City reserves and help City
College, which is a City public school.\n\n4) Reverse the cuts to CCSF
programs and classes, and in general Take a Stand for City College.\n\n5)
Resist the privatization of City College, which would be the result if City
College dropped programs whose students would be forced into private,
for-profit schools for vocational or other training.\n\nDownload and
