DESCRIPTION:What: Art Benicia Presents: Works by Hedi B. Desuyo\n\nWhen: February 1,
 2013\n 6:00-9:00 PM\n\nWhere: Olson Realty, Inc.\n 920
 1st St # 101\n Benicia, California 94510\n\n \n\nOpen during
 public hours.\n\nE-mail: info@artsbenicia.org\n\nDesuyo separates her
photography into two categories, she calls them “taken photographs” and
“made photographs.” The photographs “taken” happen out in the
world. Something catches her attention, a wall in Viet Nam showing the
passage of time, by layers of peeling paint. The frayed collar on a shirt,
worn by a man, on a bus in Chiapas. They are like gifts for the taking, she
makes the exposure and thanks the universe.\n\nHer photographs “mad e“
happen at home. They are more demanding. She sets up tableaus, arranges and
rearranges, controls the light, the smallest detail. These images usually
start with an object, a doll’s head, a plant or perhaps a fragment of
bone. She creates an environment that forms a relationship or a
juxtaposition to the object – like gathering words for a poem.\n\nWhat
“taken and made” have in common, both start in “The Space Between”
the space between reality and imagining. The man on the bus, is he going to
visit a sick friend? The foxgloves weren’t used as hats, for finger
puppets, in childhood? Hedi’s hope is that the images carry the viewer
into his or her own space between.\n\nIn her review of Desuyo’s work for
FOCUS, a Newsletter of the Pacific Center for the Photographic Arts, Lois
Brown stated the following. “Alfred Stieglitz pioneered a vision that
made way for photographic images of the natural world to suggest a sublime
world beyond the physical realm. It is within this tradition of fine art
photography that Hedi Desuyo’s work exposes us to images that, while
roote din sicence and history, point to the ineffable world of the
imagination.” Desuyo has been a photographer for over fifty years.
Originally from Germany, she has lived in Benicia since 1980.\n\nArts
Benicia Presents is a series of rotating exhibitions hosted by several
venues throughout Benicia, and is an adjunct program of Arts
Benicia.\n\nArts Benicia, a non-profit visual arts organization, gallery
and arts education center, is located at 991 Tyler St., #114 in Benicia’s
historic Arsenal district. For more information regarding this exhibit and
