DESCRIPTION:“Karen Anzoategui herself is what makes Ser a standout piece” - Wide
Lantern.\n \n“Love Karen's enthusiasm and energy! Coupled with a unique
ability to set proper words against "improper" words allowing true
musicality of poetry to pour from her soul. Karen is a writer who just so
happens to perform what she writes. Her "play" might be a revelation and
change the way we look at solo theater.” - Reg E. Gaines, Artistic
Director/2011 NYC Downtown Urban Theater Festival\n \nAnzoategui has
performed in the Hollywood Fringe, the New Latino Works Festival at
Highways and at The Mache Theatre in West Hollywood in 2011 to sold-out
audiences and to standing ovation crowds. She was then chosen as a finalist
to perform at the Downtown Urban Theatre Festival in New York City’s
prestigious festival inside the Here Arts Center. Karen stands out with her
unique story and performance chops that caught the attention of Reg E.
Gaines (book and lyrics, Bring in Da Noise, Bring in Da Funk) who served as
her dramaturge for the Hollywood Fringe Festival. After he saw Karen’s
work he immediately wanted to work with her. Karen wowed crowds at Highways
on September 30th with 4X4: New Latino Works Festival presented by Leo
Garcia and caused a stir in the heart of West Hollywood at the Macha
Theatre in November, 2011. Karen kick-started 2012 by participating as a
keynote performer for Arizona State University’s Local to Global
 Justice’s teach-in in February.\n \nAnzoategui’s show is a seamless
delight of her personal story woven through Argentina’s history of
crises, using clever theatrical strategies such as casting James Brown in
the role of her abusive father (off-the-charts-funny!). Soccer fanaticism,
sexual identity, political repression and economic collapse. “Ser” is a
unique story of the dilemmas of a transnational Latino experience that
doesn’t get more real and more fun than this. Don’t miss the 6,000 mile
match.\n \nDirected by Che'Rae Adams for original direction and dramaturgy.
