DESCRIPTION:KALW PRESENTS\nTAVIS SMILEY & DR. CORNEL WEST\nAT OAKLAND’S PARAMOUNT
 THEATRE\nSATURDAY, APRIL 28TH AT 6PM\n \nSan Francisco (April 23,2012) In
their new book, "The Rich and the Rest of Us: A Poverty Manifesto,"
award-winning broadcaster Tavis Smiley and leading public intellectual Dr.
Cornel West take on the "p" word - poverty. They challenge all Americans to
re-examine their assumptions about poverty in America - what it really is
and how to eradicate it. \n	91.7 KALW Local Public Radio, which broadcasts
the nationally-syndicated weekly radio program, "Smiley & West" on Fridays
at 1pm, is proud to present Tavis Smiley and Dr. West in their only Bay
Area appearance, at Oakland’s Paramount Theatre on Saturday, April 28th
at 6pm. The event is free and open to the public on a first-come
first-served basis. \n Smiley and West will be discussing a topic that's
hugely relevant in the Bay Area, where upwards of 12% of residents live
below the poverty line. And the discussion won't stop at the edge of the
stage. KALW is bringing together organizations from around the region that
work daily to raise awareness about poverty and economic inequality; many
of them will be represented in the lobby after the event (confirmed
community partners listed below). We encourage everyone who attends to talk
with these grassroots organizers, learn how they can get involved, and
leave with new perspective and new purpose.\n\nConfirmed community
partners:\nAlameda County Food Bank, Causa Justa/Just Cause, Center for
Urban Schools and Partnerships at Mills College, EARN (Earned Assets
Resource Network), EBASE (East Bay Alliance for a Sustainable Economy),
EBAYC (East Bay Asian Youth Center), East Oakland Community Project, Ella
Baker Center, Family Independence Initiative, PICO California (People
Improving Communities through Organizing), San Francisco Food Bank, United
Way Bay Area, The Unity Council, Urban Habitat, Women’s Economic Agenda
 Project, Youth Radio \n\n
