DESCRIPTION:"I make revolutionary art to propel history forward. This is a world where
a tiny handful controls the great wealth and knowledge humanity as a whole
has created. It is a world of profound polarization, exploitation and
suffering and billions are excluded from intellectual development and full
participation in society. It does not have to be this way and my art is
part of forging a radically different world. The work illuminates the
misery that this society creates for so many people and it often encourages
the viewer to envision how the world could be." - Dread Scott\n\nDread
Scott is in the area for the opening of his exhibition:\nREVOLUTIONARY
ARCHIVE\nOpening: Natalie and James Thompson Art Gallery, March 6 - April
6, 2012\n\n"This exhibition of recent work, developed to premiere at SJSU,
will focus on a series of paintings featuring vintage photographs from the
arc of communist revolution, from the 1871 Paris Commune to the Russian
Revolution in 1917-1919 and the 1967 Chinese Revolution. Scott reproduces
and transforms the photographs, exploring them as an archive of a contested
and sometimes forgotten history, simultaneously highlighting the widespread
rebellion they depict and obscuring parts of the image."\n\n\n\n
