Williams (1925-1996) was among the most important and influential figures in the tradition of African American armed self-defense. He became famous around the world in 1958 for his involvement in the so-called “Kissing Case”, when he defended two young black boys who were jailed after kissing a white girl. He led a fight by African Americans in the 50s and 60s to defend themselves, with guns when necessary, from Ku Klux Klan terrorist violence. In 1961, he was framed by the FBI and falsely accused of kidnapping.
