DESCRIPTION:With an introduction by Richard Becker, author of "Palestine, Israel and
the U.S. Empire" who traveled to Jenin in May 2002 following the
massacre.\n\nARNA’S CHILDREN tells the story of a theatre group that was
established in the West Bank by Arna Mer Khamis. Arna—born into a Zionist
family—married Palestinian Arab, Saliba Khamis, in the 1950s and opened
an alternative education system for children whose regular life was
disrupted by the Israeli occupation. The theatre group helped the children
express their everyday frustrations, anger, bitterness and fear. Arna’s
son Juliano, director of this film, was also a director of Jenin’s
theatre. He filmed the children during rehearsal periods from 1989 to 1996
and later went back to find that Yussef had committed a suicide attack in
Hadera in 2001, Ashraf was killed in the battle of Jenin, and Alla leads a
resistance group. Shifting back and forth in time, the film reveals the
tragedy and horror of lives trapped by the circumstances of the Israeli
occupation. (85 min., 2004)\n\nOn April 4, 2011, Juliano was assassinated
in Jenin close to the Freedom Theatre. His assassination was met with
universal condemnation. He left behind a legacy of bravery, contempt for
all barriers and an undying commitment to cultural resistance and his art.
