DESCRIPTION:Amidst a front-line human rights crisis in Alabama powerful multiracial
coalitions are growing. African American Freedom Riders are working with
Latin@ Dreamers who are working with Occupy Birmingham and others to fight
back against HB56-- one of the most oppressive anti-immigrant bills in the
US.\n\nHear from organizers who have been working in Alabama about the
impacts of HB 56 on the ground, the value based organizing strategy and
untied front approach. Please bring your thoughts on how we can build this
movement and what Bay Area organizers and organizations can
contribute.\n\nAlabama, is both a place which experienced some of the
harshest racism and civil rights abuses and also some of the most impactful
and influential organizing of the civil rights movement. That history is
still so present and many of the veterans and decedents of the civil rights
movement are stepping up in the struggle against HB 56, outraged at the
parallels of racism, abuse and Jim Crow nature. Immigrants are getting
organized and forming new organizations all over the state. As the impacts
become more widely felt and recognized unlikely allies, like business
associations, republican farmers and business owners, international
business, city chambers of commerce, mayors, county sheriffs and police
chiefs are coming out against the law. Incredibly present is the potential
national impact of the struggle and possible deep effects of a repeal on
immigrant and human rights movement nationally.\n\nSpanish translation will
