DESCRIPTION:Human trafficking, according to the Trafficking Victims Protection Act, is
sex trafficking in which a commercial sex act is induced by force, fraud,
or coercion, or in which the person induced to perform such an act has not
attained 18 years of age; or the recruitment, harboring transportation,
provision, or obtaining of a person for labor or services, through the use
of force, fraud, or coercion for the purpose of subjection to involuntary
servitude, peonage, debt bondage, or slavery. \n\nUC Berkeley's Not For
Sale chapter is sponsoring a panel which focuses on the core mission of Not
For Sale's campaign: to investigate and eradicate human trafficking.
Modern slavery is a widely known issue globally, but little is done to
prevent it legislatively. Panelists will discuss modern slavery in the
United States, an issue which has not been heavily publicized in mainstream
media.\n\nFeatured Panelists:\n\nNikki Jo Junker – Executive Director and
co-founder of With More Than Purpose \n\nDr. Kate Transchel – Professor,
History Department, Chico State University\n\nMinh Dang – Doctoral
student, School of Social Welfare, UC Berkeley\n\nLieutenant John Vanek –
San Jose Police Department Human Trafficking Task Force\n\n
