DESCRIPTION:Columbus Day and the Creation of Whiteness\nA Racial Justice
 Dialogue\nMonday, October 10th, 6:30pm\nGlaser Center. 547 Mendocino Ave.,
Santa Rosa CA\n\nOctober 10th, 1492, the day that the Arawak people
discovered Christopher Columbus, is needless to say an important date in
our history. But it also means different things to different people. On
October 10th, 2011, the Racial Justice Allies of Sonoma County is
sponsoring a discussion of "Columbus Day" (or "Indigenous Peoples Day"
depending on who you ask). We will be talking about what this means for us
today, how the myths of Columbus, the "discovery" of America, and the
creation of whiteness continue shaping our realities in 2011, and how we
can counter the dominant narrative that privileges white reality, history
and culture over that of indigenous peoples and people of color. \n\n"The
mission of the Racial Justice Allies is to create a space where white
people explore and take responsibility for racism and white privilege,
develop anti-racist identities and practices, and work as allies for racial
justice."\n\nThis event is FREE. This is a participatory event, so we
expect all to come ready to listen, share and be willing to be challenged.
 \n\nThis event is wheelchair accessible\n
