DESCRIPTION:Labor Witch Hunts In California\nThe McCarthyite witch hunts in California
in the 1950s played an important role in shaping the labor movement in the
state. Trade unionists faced attack on their jobs and their rights to make
a living. The primary purpose of the 1950s witchhunts was to destroy the
labor movement of the 1930s and 1940s which was organized in part by
communists, Trotskyists and socialists. \nThe fight back included the
large protest and sit-in at the HUAC hearings in San Francisco in
1960.\n\nOn May 13, 1960, the police used high pressure fire hoses on the
people INSIDE CITY HALL who were not allowed to enter the hearing room of
this Congressional committee at San Francisco City Hall, as was their
right. They threw people down the marble stairs of the City Hall Rotunda,
causing blood to spew everywhere, breaking ribs of at least one 60-year old
African American woman. The blood stains remained in the marble stairs for
decades. The next day, a Saturday, we had a double picket line 4 blocks
around City Hall, so closely packed, that you could only move if the person
in front of you moved. To us kids, this was a great choo-choo train. One
line went clockwise; the other counter clockwise, both solidly packed for
the 4 blocks around City Hall. When the chairperson of HUAC stepped onto
the balcony on the Polk Street side, we all gave him a mock Nazi salute and
said "Sieg Heil!" WW2 had ended just 15 years earlier. This was a labor
picketline, the kind of picketline we need to see again and again. HUAC
never returned to San Francisco.\n\nJoin with participants in this struggle
