The holiday began as a celebration of the sacrifices of workers in the 1886 three day strike in Chicago. After police murdered four striking workers at a machine plant, workers from all over the city gathered in Haymarket Square to demonstrate their solidarity with the fallen. After a probable frame-up, the Chicago police put several strike leaders on a show-trial that resulted in their lynching. We are now seeing a resurgence in the struggle. Workers across the country are showing they are prepared to fight for their right to union representation. \n\nAnd undocumented workers are standing up against racist terror.
