 (510) 672-3526 \nFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE\n\n United Teachers of
Richmond Educators to Protest Tuesday\nTo Highlight Local Impacts of
Devastating State Budget Cuts \nDemonstration to be held 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
at the corner of San Pablo Avenue and Cutting Blvd. in Richmond –
Parents, Labor Groups to Join In\n\nRICHMOND -- The United Teachers of
Richmond is mobilizing to highlight the destruction that is taking place in
our schools and community by doing all-day picketing with parents and other
labor groups on Tuesday in advance of the California Teacher
Association’s ”State of Emergency” campaign May 9-13.\n\nThe protest
is on the corner of San Pablo Avenue and Cutting Boulevard in Richmond.
It’s part of the statewide campaign to pressure lawmakers to act now to
extend current revenues to help close the state budget deficit. That
campaign next week is coordinated by a broad coalition of educators,
parents, students, labor groups and public workers. More information is at
www.castateofemergency.com.\n\n“In Richmond, we are publicizing the
impacts of more than $18 billion in state budget cuts to education funding
over the last three years,” said Diane Brown, president of United
Teachers of Richmond, which represents educators in West Contra Costa
Unified School District. “California can’t afford an all-cuts budget
that could result in an additional $4 billion in education cuts. That would
devastate California’s economy and schools. This is not the California
we want for our students, our families or our future.”\n\nDue to state
cuts, West Contra Costa Unified has made millions in cuts in recent years,
leading to soaring class sizes, and about 80 district educators still face
pink slips this spring.\n\nWHAT: West Contra Costa Unified educators
will picket before and after school to draw attention to the local impacts
of state budget cuts. Local labor groups and parents will picket during the
 school day.\n\nWHEN: 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 3.\n\nWHERE:
Corner of San Pablo Avenue and Cutting Boulevard in Richmond.\n###\nThe
United Teachers of Richmond is affiliated with the 325,000-member
California Teachers Association and the 3.2 million-member National
 Education Association.\n\n \n\n
