DESCRIPTION:Film Event: 'Juvies'\nChallenge the criminalization of our youth! \n \nOn
Friday, May 13th at the Eastside Arts Alliance in Oakland, The California
Coalition for Women Prisoners will host a screening of "Juvies" (Dir.
Leslie Neale, 66 min. USA), a film about youth tried as adults and
sentenced to outrageously long sentences.\n \nThe film forces us to ask
questions about the failures of the juvenile justice system and questions
about justice itself.\n \nThe California Coalition for Women Prisoners
regularly visits young women and trans folk sentenced as adults for crimes
they were involved in before they were 18. Some of these people are
sentenced to life without the possibility of parole (LWOP). Several women
CCWP visits are featured in the film. \n \nThis event is being organized in
collaboration with women organizing inside prisons in California, and the
evening will include some of their writing.\n \nThe film will be followed
by a moderated discussion. Come join with community groups, youth
organizers, formerly incarcerated community members, and local activists to
share ideas on how to work together to stop the criminalization of youth,
particularly youth of color, to learn about the recent SB9 legislation, to
meet with different groups, and get updates on current youth justice
campaigns and connect with continuing actions.\n \nThe event is from 7-9pm
and is free, wheelchair accessible, and open to the public. Please join
 us!\n https://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2011/04/22/18677820.php
