DESCRIPTION:On April 16 2011, global education non-profit World Savvy will host San
Francisco’s Ninth Annual World Affairs Challenge™ in partnership with
San Francisco State University. \n\nWHO: Nearly 600 students, volunteer
judges, educational leaders, and community guests are expected to take
part. Students from 23 middle and high schools around the Bay Area will
participate in this event.\n\nWHAT: The World Affairs Challenge™ is an
academic program and competition focused on this year’s central theme:
Food: Feeding the World Sustainably in the 21st Century. Throughout the
fall and winter, students work in teams to prepare a comprehensive
presentation and showcase of proposed solutions on issues related to the
political, economic, environmental and social impacts of food. Students
also study current affairs and world geography in preparation for a global
knowledge quiz, and practice their teamwork skills for the collaborative
question, a group problem-solving activity in which students are grouped
with youth from other schools to solve a real- world scenario. \n\nOn the
day of the World Affairs Challenge™ these four activities—the
presentation, the showcase, the quiz, and the collaborative
question—provide youth the opportunity to present their findings and
opinions as well as to be listened to and respected by their peers and
adults who serve as observers and judges. \n\nWHEN: Saturday, April 16,
 2011 5 – 9am-4: 30pm\n\nWHERE: San Francisco State University, 1600
Holloway Ave, San Francisco \n\nWHY: Many of today’s most pressing issues
 - protecting the environment, addressing health crises like the cholera
outbreak in Haiti, halting terrorism and responding to the worldwide
economic crisis – are global in scope and can only be effectively
addressed with international cooperation. To succeed personally and
professionally in this global context, students must be equipped with the
knowledge, skills, values and attitudes for global citizenship. The World
Affairs Challenge helps students develop the global competencies necessary
to effectively problem solve on a global level.\n\nParticipate: To help
make this event a meaningful experience for students, World Savvy invites
individuals from the community to serve as judges, proctors, and general
volunteers on Challenge Day. Anyone who has an appreciation for
international affairs and education is welcome; no prior knowledge of the
theme is required. I hope you will consider supporting Bay Area youth as
they explore solutions to some of our world’s most pressing food-related
issues, including hunger, nutrition, sustainable agriculture, the
environmental impact of our food system, trade and much more. Please sign
up by March 18th to participate as a volunteer at
