DESCRIPTION:Talk & Discussion with The Free Association (and Turbulence editors),
author of new PM Press book "Moment of Excess: Movements, Protest, and
Everyday Life"\n\nOver the past decade or so a “movement of movements”
ripped across the planet, forging new alliances and inventing new worlds.
That cycle of struggle seems to have drawn to a close. Instead, in the face
of a new round of austerity—and a deepening crisis of social
reproduction—we are glimpsing the emergence of new struggles and new
antagonistic social subjects, particularly in the global North.\n\nWhat is
the relevance, if any, of the politics, practices, and problematics of the
“counter-globalisation movement” to these new struggles? With the
future unwritten, how can we we best prepare for an event(s) of unknown
shape and time of arrival? What is the relationship between intensive
collective experiences—"moments of excess"—and "everyday life"? And can
understanding these questions help us develop a new generation of struggle,
allowing the past to “live in us,” while preventing it from weighing
“like a nightmare upon the brains of the living”?\n\nMembers of The
Free Association, authors of the new book "Moments of Excess: Movements,
Protest, and Everyday Life" (PM Press, 2011), will be discussing these and
other issues as well as recent antiausterity struggles in the UK and the
rest of Europe.\n\nThe Free Association is an ongoing experiment—a
reading collective, a writing machine, an affinity group. Most of its
members are based in Leeds, England, and their political history and
friendship dates back to the early 1990s. More information can be found at
 http://freelyassociating.org/ and
 https://secure.pmpress.org/index.php?l=product_detail&p=318.\n\nFree
Association's David Harvie and Keir Milburn will be touring to talk about
the book and related ideas.\n\n$3-5 donation at the door to benefit Station
40's event fund (no one turned away for lack of funds)\n
