POWER TO THE PEOPLE (US 1996) is an epic documentary about the Black
Panther Party and COINTELPRO that the press has called a “potent
indictment.”\n\nFollowed by speakers Claude Marks of the Freedom Archives
and Richard Brown of the SF8 on their experiences as targets of
COINTELPRO.\n\n7:00: BOLD NATIVE (Denis Henry Hennelly, US 2010) returns
after its sold-out premiere at the Red Vic in November! A daring piece of
guerrilla filmmaking, Bold Native addresses domestic “terrorism” and
animal liberation.\n\nFollowed by speakers Jake Conroy, an animal
liberation activist of 15 years and SHAC7 co-defendent who spent three
years in federal prison as a result of his above-ground activism targeting
Huntington Life Sciences and Ben Rosenfeld, a Bay area lawyer who's
focusing his efforts defending Green Scare defendants.\n\nFilmmakers also
in attendance for Q+A.\n\n9:30: THE SPOOK WHO SAT BY THE DOOR (Ivan Dixon,
US 1973) was removed from theaters soon after its release due to its
politically controversial message. The story takes place in the early 70's
in Chicago, where the CIA has trained the first African-American to show
their supposed commitment to integration and progress. However, their
subject turns out to be a black nationalist who goes on to train his own
group of "Freedom Fighters" to engage in guerrilla warfare.\n\n"This film,
originally a book by Sam Greenlee, was effectively banned for thirty
years… United Artists originally bought the film thinking it was another
straw-man blaxploitation movie, where the black people rise up against the
white devil but only in a farcical sense. Soon after the release of The
Spook Who Sat By the Door it was removed from theaters voluntarily by
United Artists because of the politically radical message.” - Utopia or
 Bust
 (http://utopiaorbust.wordpress.com/2009/06/20/the-spook-who-sat-by-the-door/)\n\nSan
Francisco is dangerously close to losing this 30 year old worker-owned
community establishment. All the filmmakers and speakers in this series are
donating 100% the box office revenue to the keep the Red Vic's doors open
so they can continue to give voice to films like these that mainstream does
NOT want you you to see!\n
