The Bay Street Mall was built on top of an ancient Ohlone burial site after years of protest actions by the local Native American community. The construction of the mall unearthed THOUSANDS of human remains, many of which were taken away to landfill in the name of consumerism.\n\nWhile the construction of the mall couldn't be stopped, we in the Bay Area Native American community ask the non-Native community to join us in protesting this obscene structure. On "Black Friday" every year we remind the public that this is sacred Indian land and the Bay Street Mall should be boycotted.\n\n\n-------------------------------------------------\nThis is part of the ongoing:\n\n\nSacred Site/Shellmound Peace Walk\n\nSponsored by\n\nIndian People Organizing for Change,(IPOC),Shellmound Peace Walkers, SSP&RIT and\n\nFoot Prints for Peace\n\nNovember 17-26, 2010\n\nBeginning in San Jose,CA traveling through the Bay Area to Sogorea-Te` Shellmound -Glen Cove Vallejo, ending at the Emeryville Huchiun Shellmound (Bay Street Mall)\n\nIPOC Shellmound Peace Walkers along with SSP&RIT and Foot Prints for Peace invites all to join in a journey of walk and prayer to remember our ancestors that lived on this land for thousands of years. The walk will be led by traditional Native American leaders and Nipponzan Myohoji Buddhist. We will walk and pray with our ancestors in areas where shellmounds and sacred sites have been desecrated by development and celebrate the return of our ancestors due to the NAGPRA law recent changes.\n\n\nNeeded for the walk:\n\n· Bring a good attitude\n\n· Please bring your own utensils, bowl, plate and cup. Sleeping bag and clothes for all types of weather, including rain gear. Money for Alcatraz Ferry on Thanksgiving morning $16-$18 and any other incidentals that you may need\n\nDonations needed:\n\nPlaces for people to stay the night at our destinations. Groups to provide evening meals. Water for the walkers Financial donations to purchase supplies.
