DESCRIPTION:Film evenings begin with optional potluck refreshments and social hour at
6:30 pm,\nfollowed by the film at 7:30 pm, followed by a discussion after
the film.\n\nSHARKWATER\nThe Truth will Surface\nby Rob
Stewart\n\nFilmmaker Rob Stewart does a magnificent job of thoroughly
dismantling the caricature of sharks as ferocious monsters deserving of our
fear and hatred; he debunks historical stereotypes and media depictions of
sharks as bloodthirsty, man-eating monsters. Instead, he reveals the
reality of sharks as pillars in the evolution of the seas and captures
their gentle beauty and vital importance to life as we know it. His film
reveals the importance of the oceans and the sharks’ place at the top of
the food chain to keep everything balanced.\n\nBut you don’t need to be
an environmentalist to appreciate the frightening ordeal he found himself
in while filming. In an effort to protect sharks, Rob Stewart teams up
with renegade conservationist Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd Conservation
Society. Their unbelievable adventure together starts with a battle
between the Sea Shepherd and shark poachers in Guatemala, resulting in
pirate boat rammings, gunboat chases, mafia espionage, corrupt court
systems and attempted murder charges, forcing them to flee for their lives.
Stewart’s film is his courageous documenting of the heart-wrenching
barbarity imposed upon sharks (and other aquatic life), exposing the
exploitation and corruption surrounding the world’s shark populations in
the marine reserves of Cocos Island, Costa Rica, and the Galapagos Islands,
Ecuador.\n\nStewart discovers these magnificent creatures have gone from
predator to prey, and despite surviving the earth’s history of mass
extinctions and surviving for 450 million years, they could easily be wiped
out within a few years due to human greed. His remarkable journey of
courage and determination changes from a mission to save the world’s
sharks, into a fight for his life, and that of humankind.\n\nWheelchair
accessible around the corner at 411 28th Street\n\n$5 donations are
 accepted\n\n\n\n\n
