DESCRIPTION:From Woody Allen’s “Manhattan” to the “L Word,” Wallace Shawn’s
quirky characters have made him a familiar face to movie and TV audiences
since the 1970s. Less known for his progressive politics till the 2009
release of his Essays, a “hodgepodge of short pieces on war, theater,
sex, art and privileged guilt,” Shawn is clearly in the camp of
“creative dreamers,” as the LA Times describes him.\n\nShawn will be
talking with activists and reading excerpts from his book at Socialism
2010, which include snippets in his 2004 essay “Up To Our Necks in
War,” where he writes, “And to denounce all of those whose battle for
change has not excluded violent methods may be to condemn most people on
earth to inevitable suffocation…. I can’t bring myself to condemn
Nelson Mandela and everyone else whose principled struggle for justice fell
short of the non-violent ideal.”\n\n$10 admission at the door. Seating is
 limited so pre-register at http://www.socialismconference.org/oakland.
Select the “single session” option, or register for any larger part of
the conference, to guarantee your seat.\n
