DESCRIPTION:The 1934 San Francisco longshore strike which launched a general strike as
a result of the murder of two workers Nicolas Bordoise a striking seaman
and Howard Sperry a strike supporter in San Francisco and 4 other workers
up and down the West Coast. This forum will screen the film and follow it
up with a discussion on the lessons of this strike for today.\n\nThis 16th
annual Laborfest is in commemoration of the 1934 General Strike, including
the July 5, 1934 "Bloody Thursday," when 2 workers, Howard Sperry and Nick
Bordoise, were shot and killed in San Francisco by police forces during the
longshore and maritime strike. This incident brought about the San
Francisco General Strike which shut down the entire city and led to
hundreds of thousands of workers joining the trade union movement. The ILWU
continues to recognize "Bloody Thursday" by shutting down all West Coast
ports every July 5. It is because of the 1934 general strikes in San
Francisco, Minneapolis and Toledo that we won the 1935 Social Security Act
 and 1935 Unemployment Insurance
 Act.\nhttp://www.koce.org/video/bloodyThurs.mov\nSee
