DESCRIPTION:Students will rally at Senator Feinstein's office on Thursday, May 20th to
urge the Senator to call on her colleagues to get the Federal Dream Act
(H.R.1751/S.729) on the legislative calendar now! The Federal Dream Act
would provide a pathway to legalization for U.S.-raised and educated
undocumented young people pursuing higher education.\n\n\n\nSAN FRANCISCO,
CA—65,000 undocumented students graduate from U.S. high schools every
year. Many of these young people were brought to this country at an age
before they could understand the consequences of their actions. They were
raised here, went through our K-12 educational system, and call the U.S.
their home. They are honor roll students, aspiring teachers, doctors, and
lawyers, but despite their hard work and determination to achieve their
dreams of higher education, they are being denied the opportunity to
participate and contribute as full members of society.\n\nUndocumented
students do not qualify for any state or federal financial aid. Moreover,
those whom are able to obtain their college degrees, are unable to use them
to work. The Federal Dream Act (H.R.1751 & S.729), introduced in Congress
on March 26, 2009, would provide a pathway to legalization for undocumented
individuals who were brought to this country before the age of 16, graduate
from a U.S. high school or obtain an equivalent GED, lived in the U.S.
continuously for at least five years before the bill is passed, have good
moral character, and enroll in a college or university, or enlist in the
military for at least two years.\n\nIf the Federal Dream Act legislation
does not pass, students who have done nothing wrong will continue to be
subject to deportation simply because of our failed immigration system. On
Thursday, May 20th UC, CSU, CC, and high school students across the state
will be gathering at Senator Dianne Feinstein's Los Angeles and San
Francisco offices to call on the Senator to champion this piece of
legislation in Congress, and get it passed now. This is the ninth year
since the Federal Dream Act was first introduced and students have grown
weary of the government's inaction.\n\n• WHO: UC, CSU, CC, and high
