DESCRIPTION:Last week, a caravan of 30 human rights activists and journalists from
Mexico and several European countries attempted to bring essential supplies
to San Juan Copala, a remote community that has been blockaded for months
by paramilitaries affiliated with the state government.\n \nAs the caravan
approached the community it came under attack by paramilitaries firing
assault rifles. Beatriz Cariño , beloved leader of CACTUS and mother of
two young children was killed as was Tyri Antero Jaakola, a human rights
volunteer from Finland. Other members of the caravan fled under fire and
some were seriously wounded, others were kidnapped by their assailants and
later released as international attention mounted.\n\nWhat we are we are
calling for:\n\n• Punishment of those responsible;\n• Guarantees of the
safety and the lives of the survivors of the caravan;\n• Halt to attacks
on the Autonomous Municipality of San Juan Copala;\n• Withdrawal of the
blockade around the municipality;\n• Halt on the activity of paramilitary
groups.\n \nThese killings in Oaxaca raise concerns that narco-related
violence across Mexico is giving rise to increased violence and impunity in
other conflict zones.\nGiven pernicious effect of the Mexican Army
throughout the country, we also reject the use of violence as a pretext for
militarization of the Triqui Zone.\n \n
