DESCRIPTION:The Santa Cruz Public Libraries continues a film series about the 1930s
with Tim Robbins' movie about the innovative staging of the radical WPA
Federal Theatre Project's play "The Cradle Will Rock." One day after May
Day, we feature a movie with a sweeping look at New York City in the late
1930s. The New Deal, the WPA, funding for theater and all the arts, fascist
art dealers, communist artists, rising union consciousness, persistence of
corporate power, Rockefeller, Orson Welles, Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, an
amazing ensemble cast assembled by writer, producer, and director Tim
Robbins. Need more reasons? Discussion afterward. I would suggest that if
we're going to have a big government why can't it fund New Deal style
programs now instead of wars and banker and industry bailouts? Come see a
Santa Cruz favorite (over 900 checkouts, 300 of this copy; the other 2 are
lost or thrashed from overuse) this Sunday, Central library, 1:30-4:30
