DESCRIPTION:Film evenings begin with optional potluck refreshments and social hour at
6:30 pm,\nfollowed by the film at 7:30 pm, followed by a discussion after
the film.\n\nDestiny\n\nBy Youssef Chahine\n\nThis spectacular film
delivers a strong message against religious intolerance. It's the story of
Averroes, the famous philosopher and scientist who lived in 12th century
Andalusia -- a land torn between religious and political intolerance. It's
the story of the struggle between the rational secular and the fanatical
orthodox. It's set in 12th century Andalusia but could just as well be set
in any contemporary society today. Egyptian director Youssef Chahine
invites us to get to know Averroes, the free-minded writer who wrote in an
age when Europe was living under religious inquisition, as a model of
openness and wisdom in an age of terrible anguish. Chahine shows through
Averroes' story that "ideas have wings; no one can stop their flight. The
free expression of ideas have the power to prevail over the forces of
intolerance and limitation." This is their destiny. Chahine very
courageously honors Averroes and at the same time does homage to the
golden age of Hollywood cinema. The film is a splendor for the eyes and
ears.\n\nWheelchair accessible around the corner at 411 28th
 Street\n\n$5 donations are accepted\n
