DESCRIPTION:JUSTICE FOR ALEX SANCHEZ!!\n\nOn Wednesday April 14th at 7:00pm in the
Namaste Lounge we will be screening the film "Hijos De La Guerra" followed
by a Panel Discussion on Alex Sanchez facilitated by Nane Alejandrez of
Barrios Unidos and the wearealex.org Bay Area Committee\n\nHijos De La
Guerra-\n("Children of the War") is a documentary about the worlds largest
and most violent street gang the Mara Salvatrucha, also known as the MS-13.
The Mara Salvatrucha was formed in Los Angeles during the late 1980s by
teenage refugees from the Salvadoran civil war, as a means of protecting
themselves from the crossfire of ethnic rivalries. The gang channeled the
widespread trauma that a genocidal civil war had wrought on an entire
generation of orphaned and militarized kids into fanatical violence. This,
among many other reasons, has lead the FBI to declare the MS-13 to be the
fastest-growing and most violent street gang in the United States.\n\nAlex
Sanchez-\nAlex Sanchez's family migrated from El Salvador in the 1970s. He
was a former MS-13 gang member who turned his life around becoming an
internationally recognized peacemaker and co-founding Homies Unidos in Los
Angeles in 1998. On June 24, 2009, Alex was arrested and named in a federal
indictment based on weak evidence charging him, among a group on 23 others,
as an active gang member. He is currently out on bail but is far from free
as he is under strict probation and awaiting his trial in October. But Alex
and his supporters continue to fight for his freedom.\n\n*****We want to
host this event to not only inform the community on the issues but in hopes
of getting people involved with the We Are Alex campaign and also to *FUND
RAISE* for his case. We will be selling T-Shirts (15$), Prisoner Artwork
(5-10$), Post Cards (2-5$) and accepting donations of any amount, so please
come with a some funds if it is in your capacity to do
so.*****\n\n\nSponsored by the College Nine & College Ten CoCurricular
Programs Office and the Chicano/Latino Resource Center (El Centro)\n\nWe
wish to make this event accessible to all, for accommodations please
