DESCRIPTION:Ana – a revolutionary communist Iranian woman and former political
prisoner – speaks on Women and the Righteous Uprising in Iran\n\n“I
struggled, I was imprisoned, I was tortured and even murdered. I struggled
to bury the monarchy in the hope of freedom and equality, but you stole all
my struggles. You throw me into the depth of history, you sent me to hell,
you put a veil on my head and deprived me of my most basic rights ... you
insulted me, you lashed me for bad covering, using your Islamic laws you
gave men unlimited power to win their support … now this is me. Me, me
who has risen, this is me who has awakened … and I am aware that within
Islam there is nothing but slavery and imprisonment (for women), and I know
that cannot achieve even my smallest demands…My liberation, it can only
be achieved by my own hand, with our united and conscious rebelliousness
... Down with the Islamic Republic of Iran, and down with compulsory
Hejab.”\n--from a play by Ana about Iranian women\n\nAna rebelled against
the Shah’s regime in the 1970s as a member of the Iranian Student
Association. After the 1979 revolution, she returned to Iran to fight for a
real revolution. She marched with tens of thousands in 1979 on
International Women’s Day against Khomeini’s forced veiling of women.
She was one of many revolutionaries, communists, and others who were
arrested and tortured by the Islamic Republic, spending 8 years as a
political prisoner and suffering horribly. She is one of the few people who
witnessed and survived the regime’s 1988 massacre of political
prisoners.\n\nToday, Ana remains a courageous revolutionary communist, an
uncompromising opponent of both Iran’s Islamic Republic and U.S.
imperialism, a fighter for the emancipation of all humanity. She’s a
spokesperson for the March 8 Women's Organization (Iran-Afghanistan) which
has organized International Women's Day demonstrations globally.\n\nFriday,
