DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday, March 23, author, policy analyst and activist Antonia Juhasz
will be the special guest at an event hosted by Peace Action of San Mateo
County and San Mateo County Democracy for America. Juhasz’s topic is also
the title of her most recent book, “The Tyranny of Oil: the World’s
Most Powerful Industry – And What We Must Do To Stop It.” Copies of the
book, recently re-released as a paperback and updated with a new preface,
will be on sale, along with her previous book, “The Bu$h Agenda: Invading
the World, One Economy at a Time.” \nThe Toronto Star called “The
Tyranny of Oil”, “...part homage to 150 years of anti-monopoly
muckraking and trust-busting and part signpost to where the leading edge of
the environmental and social activist movements are headed.” The
Christian Science Monitor called it “...a brave, groundbreaking case
study,’ adding that “…a good first step toward true energy
independence is to read this insightful book.” \nAntonia Juhasz has been
with the San Francisco-based group Global Exchange since last July, as the
Director of its new Chevron Program which, as she says, “links
communities across California, the U.S. and the world to expose the true
cost of Chevron and reign in the entire oil industry.” The Program
focuses on the many environmental, human rights, and other crimes of the
ubiquitous San Ramon-based corporation, now the world’s fifth-largest
company. Juhasz is the lead author and editor of “The True Cost of
Chevron: An Alternative Annual Report”, which Global Exchange and other
organizations released at Chevron’s annual meeting last May. Among other
topics, she will discuss upcoming protest actions planned at Chevron’s
world headquarters in San Ramon this coming May. For more information on
Juhasz and her books, log on to www.TyrannyofOil.org. To find out more
about the Chevron program, go to www.GlobalExchange.org/chevron.\nThe oil
boom of the last century warmed and lit up our homes and powered our modes
of transportation, but it obviously did not come without its costs, both
financial and human. All around the world we have seen pollution of our air
and water, evidence of climate change, war, abuse of human rights and
economic injustice – as a result of the world’s dependence on oil. On
March 23 Antonia Juhasz will further address these circumstances and
articulate what citizens can do in response.\nIn addition to her work at
Global Exchange, Juhasz is on the National Advisory Board of Iraq Veterans
Against the War and is particularly well-known for her work uncovering the
oil industry’s pursuit of the Iraq Oil Law. She is also a Fellow at Oil
Change International and a Visiting Scholar at the Institute for Policy
Studies. Juhasz has also worked as a legislative assistant to two members
of Congress. \nAs will surely benefit the evening, Global Exchange’s web
site describes Juhasz as “a passionate writer and speaker who conveys
complex information in a manner that is both accessible and motivational to
 others.”\nThe March 23 event is at 7:30 PM at Carpenter’s Hall, 1153
Chess Drive (off Foster City Boulevard) in Foster City. Admission is $5-10
sliding scale, with no one turned away for lack of funds. Dessert, coffee
and tea will be available. The hall is wheelchair accessible.\n\n
