DESCRIPTION:Come and join Revolution Books in a discussion of "The Origins of Women's
Oppression and the Road to Emancipation ".This discussion is based on
Ardea Skybreak's book "Of Primeval Steps & Future Leaps". Spin the globe,
and anywhere you look - whether the capitalist west or the Islamic east -
women are robbed of their humanity, subjected to violence, brutalization,
and systematic degradation: enforced patriarchy, denial of basic rights
like abortion, sexual objectification, sex trafficking and slavery,
domestic violence, rape, and this list goes on. This is totally outrageous
and intolerable - and it doesn't have to be this way. Skybreak shows that
women have not always been subordinate to men, and how their oppression
isn't written in our genes, or coded in "human nature," male aggression,
etc. Instead, she digs into the economic and social factors responsible for
the earliest forms of social inequalities between the sexes and when they
came into play. How were early, pre-class societies organized - and were
they characterized by perfect harmony between the sexes? What was "mother
right" and why was it overthrown? When and why did patriarchy - and
monogamy - emerge? How did all this correspond to changes in the material
conditions of those societies? And what (if anything) can this tell us
about why women are still oppressed today - and what it will take to fully
liberate women and end this nightmare?\n
