 progress\n\nOn January 20 2009 Barack Obama became the first 
 African-American U.S. president. Fed up with eight years of the hated Bush 
 regime, the majority of people who voted for Obama had high hopes for 
 change.\n\nHistory teaches us that real change has always been the result 
 of struggle. From the abolition of slavery, to workers’ gains such as the 
 40-hour workweek and social security, to LGBT rights, and from women’s 
 suffrage, to the desegregation of the South, to the end of the Vietnam War- 
 progressive change is only brought about by grassroots people’s 
 movements.\n\nWe will present a Marxist analysis and evaluation of the 
 Obama Administration’s first year and of Obama’s first State of the 
 Union address. Also we will offer examples of past movements that resulted 
 in progressive change and their lessons that can be used today.\n\nJoin us
