DESCRIPTION:"From the Badlands to Alcatraz" chronicles the heroic journey of Lakota
Sioux from the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota as they arrive in San
Francisco and prepare for the extreme challenge of swimming from Alcatraz
to the San Francisco shore, moving beyond limitations and reclaiming health
and spiritual power for themselves and members of their tribe.\n\nThe film
will screen at the 10 a.m. program, Sunday, February 7 at the San Francisco
Ocean Film Festival Theater 39, The Embarcadero and Beach Street, San
Francisco. For ticket information visit: www.oceanfilmfest.org.\n\n"From
the Badlands to Alcatraz" documents not only the Alcatraz swim, but also
the struggle for people living on the Pine Ridge Reservation to change
their diet and overall health in the face of crushing poverty.
Producer/Director Dr. Nancy Iverson, a San Francisco pediatrician, cared
for Pine Ridge families in the 1990s. Her film developed from PATHSTAR
(www.pathstar.org), a nonprofit she co-founded to help reservation people
live healthier lives. Every year, Iverson brings Pine Ridge people to San
Francisco to participate in a week-long program culminating with the
 Alcatraz swim.\n\n
