 topics around Nature Worship, Communitarian Ethos and Sustainability: 
 Sacred Groves and Sustainable Living in South Asia. He is a  2009 Fulbright 
 Fellow; Chair, Center for Interdisciplinary Studies, Kolkata, 
 India.\n\nDebal Deb will discuss the attitudes and values towards nature 
 and society in South Asia 's indigenous cultures - and what we can learn 
 from this, particularly towards developing a sustainable mode of natural 
 resource use.\n\nDebal Deb is a biologist. His post-doctoral research 
 included human ecology of marine and estuarine resource use at the Indian 
 Institute of Science, Bangalore and ecological economics at the University 
 of California, Berkeley, and has made extensive documentation of sacred 
 groves and ponds in West Bengal. While conducting free-lance research in 
 food web theory, agroecology, ecoforestry, natural resource management and 
 community forest management, he founded Vrihi, the only non-governmental 
 indigenous rice gene bank in east India, and Basudha, a demonstration farm 
 where villagers learn techniques of building low-cost housing, biodiverse 
 farming, ecoforestry, alternative energy use and water harvesting.\n
