 portrayed by official history and propaganda, is a celebration of the 
 friendship between Native Americans and European settlers. However, the 
 history of the “discovery” and the colonization of the Americas is one 
 of the near extermination of entire nations of Native Americans. The brutal 
 genocide of Native Americans was carried out over centuries of westward 
 expansion, right through the Gold Rush here in California.\n\nAmerican 
 Indians continue to suffer many forms of oppression and injustice today, 
 whether it is the deplorable conditions of Indian Reservations or 
 institutional discrimination against Native peoples. Against this history 
 of oppression, Native Americans have struggled for centuries, a struggle 
 that continues to this day. Join us for a commemoration and a discussion of
