Jungle… \n\nJoin Amazon Watch and others in front of the Peruvian
Consulate in San Francisco. \n\nTuesday, June 16, 2009, at 9:00 AM
 \n\nPeruvian Consulate\n870 Market St\nSan Francisco, CA 94102\n(415)
 362-5185 … give ‘em a call! \n\n \n\nAn emergency demonstration will be
held on Tuesday at the Peruvian Consulate in San Francisco as part of a
week long call to action by Rising Tide, to decry the attack on indigenous
peoples in the Peruvian Amazon on Friday, June 5. \n\nDuring last
Friday’s violent raid, Special Forces of the Peruvian National Police
opened fire on a peaceful indigenous blockade on a road outside of Bagua,
in a remote area of northern Peruvian Amazon. Several thousand Awajun and
Wambis indigenous peoples were forcibly dispersed by tear gas and live
ammunition leaving more than 150 injured and at least 40 confirmed dead,
although the death toll is likely to continue to grow. 22 Police officers
were also reported killed. Indigenous protests throughout the Amazon
continue to grow while the Garcia Administration expands the State of
Emergency in the region.\nPeaceful demonstrations have been underway for
nearly two months with no bloodshed until Friday’s aggressive raid.
\n\nThe protests are in response to President Garcia’s failure to uphold
indigenous peoples’ constitutionally guaranteed rights. In particular
indigenous peoples are calling for the repeal of a series of Presidential
decrees that Garcia promulgated in the context of the Free Trade Agreement
(FTA) with the United States. These degrees erode indigenous rights to land
and resources in favor of oil and mineral exploitation. Garcia continues to
block open and democratic debate about the constitutionality of the decrees
 in Peru’s Congress. \n\n\nAmazon Watch \nTel 415-487-9600 \n\n
