DESCRIPTION:The Deepening Struggle in Latin America\nNew Developments in the fight to
free the Cuban FiveIn Peru, protests and occupations by Indigenous
communities are continuing against the government of Alan García.
Indigenous peoples are demanding the overturn of several laws signed by the
Peruvian president in 2008 that allow for massive corporate development on
Indigenous land. The government stepped up its repression and declared a
state of emergency in early May, banning public gatherings and permitting
unrestricted police searches. A general strike has been called for June
15.\n\nIn Venezuela, the struggle between classes has intensified following
the referendum victory that abolished term limits for elected
 officials.\n\nNationalizations, expropriations, occupations and continued
growth of communal councils all signify the growing socialist revolution.
The brutal reaction of the capitalist class in defense of their wealth
underscores this trend. As the struggle deepens, the line between
pro-capitalist and pro-socialist elements will sharpen.\n\nCome hear about
recent developments in Venezuela, Peru and other countries of Latin America
and how you can become involved in defending the gains that have been made
for the poor and working people there. \n\n \nNew Developments in the fight
to free the Cuban Five\nThe Supreme Court is expected to issue a decision
on June 15 on whether or not they will hear the appeal of the Cuban Five.
Meanwhile, the Obama Administration filed a brief urging the Court to deny
the Five a hearing.\n\nAs part of this evening’s program, we will view a
short video, recently broadcast by the Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC).
The moving mini-documentary tells the complete story of the Cuban Five,
featuring interviews with René González’ wife Olga and daughter Irma,
as well as with Leonard Weinglass, one of the Cuban Five’s
attorneys.\n\nJoin us for discussion on this important case.\n\nAlso,
report-back from the International Day of Solidarity to End the Siege of
Gaza and an update on struggle against Proposition 8. \n\n
