DESCRIPTION:Free Film Screening and Presentation:\n\nBetita Martinez, author, elder and
activist, presents the film made as a companion to her book, "500 Years of
Chicano History: Viva la Causa."\n\nThe film is an introduction to Chican@
history from the point of view of the people who lived it. This film is
sympathetic to the issues of oppressed peoples, without flinching for the
difficulties facing “el Movimiento” including class, sexism,
interracial unity, and homophobia. \n\nThis fall marks a decade since the
Seattle WTO protests--and this also means it's been almost ten years since
Betita Martinez's "Where Was The Color in
 Seattle"\nhttp://colours.mahost.org/articles/martinez.html\n\nAll ages are
welcome. \nAn event presented by Being John Brown & Barrios Unidos:\n\nThe
California Coalition of Barrios Unidos began as a community based peace
movement in the violent streets of urban California in 1977. Incorporated
as a non-profit organization in 1993, the national office of Santa Cruz
Barrios Unidos established the mission to prevent and curtail violence
amongst youth within Santa Cruz County by providing them with life
enhancing alternatives. Over the past twenty-five years Barrios Unidos has
developed a model that seeks to reclaim and restore the lives of struggling
youth while promoting unity amongst families and neighbors through
 community building efforts.\nhttp://www.barriosunidos.net\n\nBeing John
Brown is a group of activists committed to challenging white supremacy. We
wish to see a world in which white privilege and oppression of people of
color have been completely eliminated, and our purpose is to help bring
about that world. We believe that white people have a responsibility to
actively confront white supremacy, as well as to take action in solidarity
with organizing led by people of color. Being John Brown exists in order to
organize in our communities for these purposes, and to support activists
and organizations with similar goals. Being John Brown is open to anyone
who agrees with these principles. beingjohnbrown@gmail.com\n
