DESCRIPTION:This forum will explore some of the most important and pertinent issues of
today concerning race, justice and incarceration in this country.\n\nDo we
really live in a land of the free?\nOr are the prison systems our new
plantations?\n\nIs slavery a thing of the past if the majority of people
who are imprisoned are the same people this country once enslaved?\n\nWhy
is our prison system filled with people of color? Why are so many young men
of color still gunned down on the street by cops?\n\nAnd why, in the entire
history of our country, has a police officer never been convicted of
murder?\n\nIn light of the tragic slaying of Oscar Grant and so many more
innocent men and women, it is our obligation and responsibility to question
the system we live in.\n\nPlease join us for an evening of intelligent and
compelling discussion with people who have suffered at the hands of this
racist and unjust system, and the people who are trying to bring about
 change.\n\n-------------------------------------------------------------------------\n\nFeatured
Speakers include:\n\nJack Bryson - uncle of Oscar Grant, a young father who
was shot and killed by the BART police.\n\nStephanie Montoya - sister of
Jerry Amaro, a young man beat to death nine years ago by the officer who
went on to become the head of Internal Affairs for the Oakland Police
Department.\n\nJeff Mackler - head of the Mobilization to Free Mumia
Abu-Jamal, a brilliant journalist, author and activist framed for the
murder of a cop and sentenced to death because he encouraged the people of
Philadelphia to fight police corruption.\n\nRebecca Doran - a death row
activist who has seen the deplorable conditions of life on the "inside" and
the way prisons continue to drain the limited finances of working class
families on the "outside".\n\nEveryone is welcome to attend and engage in
discussion after the presentation.\n\nThis event is free, but donations are
 welcome.\n\n https://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2009/04/12/18588102.php
