 March 30). A fictionalization of her real life experiences counseling 
 inmates of death row, this film tells the story of the relationship that 
 develops between a convicted murderer and the nun sent to help him with his 
 final appeal before execution.  As Sister Helen gently but relentlessly 
 holds the mirror up to convicted murderer Matthew Poncelet, over time he 
 comes to realize his own humanity, while she struggles to find a common 
 ground between the rights of the victim and the rights of the accused.  
 Susan Sarandon won Best Actress for her portrayal of Sister Helen, and 
 nominations were given to Sean Penn (for Best Actor as Poncelet) and to
