DESCRIPTION:.\n\nA SEMINAR ON THE CURRENT STRUCTURE OF RACE AND RACIALIZATION AND ITS
RELATION TO OBAMA'S ELECTION\n \n\n- by Steve Martinot\n\n(author of The
Rules of Racialization and other books) \n\n \nTuesday, March 17, 2009,
 7:30pm \n\n\nBerkeley Unitarian Fellowship Hall\n\nCedar St. & Bonita Ave.,
Berkeley\n\nBenjy Room, 2nd floor (upstairs in back\n\noff the playground
 courtyard on Bonita
 Ave.)\n\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\n\nDoes Obama's
election put a real dent in white supremacy \nor is it only symbolic?\n
\nHow to develop an anti-racist politics with Obama in the White
House.\n\nA course in sensitivity training for understanding the new
 presidency. \n ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\n\nThis
seminar (including discussion) will synthesize four topics: \n\n1) the
structures of racialization in the US, and what the election\nof Obama
means for them; \n\n2) the relation of the two party system to the
 racialization of US\nsociety; \n\n3) what Obama can and cannot do, and why;
\n\n4) the structure of the disconnect between political representation in
the US and the citizens it pretends to represent. \n\n\nWe shall try to
understand, in the context of Obama's election, how the structures of
racialization have conditioned national politics on an institutional as
well as a daily level. And it will try to understand Obama's election in
the context of the structures of racialization - that is, how those
structures frame the way we think about politics. \n\n\nThe meetings began
on March 3. They will continue on March 17, 2009, and run for 3 months,
meeting every two weeks, at 7:30, on Tuesday evening, at the Berkeley
Unitarian Fellowship Hall.\n\n \nThe seminar will be conducted as follows.
Steve Martinot will give a brief presentation on a pre-announced topic,
combining former researches with analyses of events of the moment, and then
the space will be opened for discussion. There may be reading assigned, but
it will be small. \n\nParticipants will be expected to read the newspaper,
and/or some alternate press. (Coming in with reports from corporate TV news
as if they were real will get you thrown out of the room.)
 \n\n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\n\nThose interested, please contact either
\nCynthia or \nSteve \nOr just show up at the first meetings.
