DESCRIPTION:What are mathematical models and what is the role of mathematical thinking
in how we understand the physical world? Do we live in a universe having
more than three spatial dimensions? What might we learn about nature and
reality from experiments performed in the giant new "atom smasher" built in
Europe? Dr. Matilde Marcolli will appear at Revolution Books for a
discussion of the role of mathematical thinking in our understanding of
reality and how experiments in the new CERN "atom smasher" may provide us
with insights into some of the deepest questions about the universe. She
will also discuss important political issues relating to the popularization
of science. Dr. Marcolli is a professor of mathematics in the Division of
Mathematics,Physics, and Astronomy at the California Institute of
Techology(Caltech). She is currently on an extended visit to the
Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in Berkeley.\nThis event is for a
 general audience.\n
