DESCRIPTION:Racism, police brutality and the economic crisis:\norganizing to fight
back\nAnita Gay rally, Berkeley, Calif., 08-23-2008The election of Barack
Obama as president of the United States was an occasion of historic
significance. Obama’s victory was evidence of the achievements the Black
Liberation struggle has made in eroding white supremacy. When Obama became
the 44th president, however, racism did not magically fade away. In this
period of hard economic times, African American people continue to be
disproportionately the victims of high levels of unemployment, police
brutality and incarceration. But this is not new. The vast wealth of this
capitalist system was built off the suffering of Black people.\n\nFeatured
speaker, Eugene Puryear, 2008 PSL candidate for Vice President and Howard
University student, will speak about Obama, the economic crisis and the
struggle against racism. As part of commemorating Black History Month, we
will also recognize the often ignored but highly significant contributions
of African American people to science and technology.\n
