DESCRIPTION:\nWritten in the mid-1980’s, this former Broadway production "The Piano
Lesson" is set in the 1930’s, concerning the struggle of two siblings
over a precious family heirloom, a piano carved with images of their
African ancestors and crafted by their enslaved grandfather. The Great
Depression serves as the historical backdrop to the play as well as black
migration during this period from the south to north. Through his play
Wilson teaches that the history must be shared, accepted, and then valued
for the lessons that it teaches before the future can be achieved. Wilson
continues this theme through his characters of Berniece and Boy Willie, who
represent the struggle for accepting and valuing the past, as represented
through struggle over the fate of the family’s most treasured heirloom
the piano.\n\nALL PERFORMANCES WILL BEGIN AT 7 PM, DOORS OPEN AT 6:30
PM,\n\nEXCEPT 3PM MATINEE ON SUNDAY 2/15\n\nPrices are $14 for Adults and
$11 for Students \n\nThe African American Theater Arts Troupe serves to
enhance the climate of the cultural diversity on the campus and in the
community, focusing on the recruitment, recognition, and retention of
under-represented students by providing a sense of belonging and by
bringing in productions about people of color, encouraging the celebration
of American diversity. In the past years, we the UCSC African American
Theater Arts Troupe Fund. have raised and awarded over $75,000 in
scholarships to UCSC students who work with the African American Theater
