DESCRIPTION:Please join us for ALCHEMY's first Santa Cruz performance and our \nfirst
showing of "THE BEAUTIFUL UGLY"—a collection of original works \nby womyn
of color residing in the Bay Area. Inspired by leaders such \nas Adrienne
Riche, Audre Lourde, bell hooks, and others, The Beautiful \nUgly aims to
challenge traditional structures of theatre, redefining \ntheatre through
the use of poetry, spoken word, and movement within a \ncollective. It
explores ideas from body image and sexuality to race \nand language, taking
the audience on an intimate journey toward \nself-realization and social
responsibility. ALCHEMY: THE BEAUTIFUL \nUGLY is Yvonne Alvarez, Emily
Encina, Karla Flores, Wendy Fong, Aries \nHines-Coleman, Rahsheka Keith,
Vanessa Lewis, Elisa Noemi. \n\nThe "CREATING ALCHEMY WORKSHOP" will
provide an opportunity for you to \nexplore yourself— yourself being a
political body (your body being a \nphysical entity that is emotional,
intellectual, and spiritual) and \nhow we relate to the world around us. We
will be responding to \ncurrent events through use of collaborative and
individual writing and \nperformance. We hope to challenge ideas and each
other and take risks \nto create theatre together. Be prepared to write and
move. The \nworkshop is free and everyone is welcome to attend. \n\nThe
vision of ALCHEMY is to create a space and performance that allows \nwomyn
of all colors, sexualities, abilities, cultures, and backgrounds \nto unite
and collaborate, empowering one another to express ourselves \nthrough
theatre, film, digital media, poetry, spoken word, art, music, \netc, and
comment on where we stand in relation to current social and \npolitical
events in the Bay Area and the world. This project is \ninspired by
Adrienne Rich's book, On Lies, Secrets, and Silence. She \ntalks about how
remaining silent is a form of lying to oneself and to \nothers because she
is denying herself and others of that "unspoken \ntruth." She also goes on
about how the most interesting things in \nlife are "the possibilities that
exist between two people, or a mount \na group of people," describing it as
a "kind of alchemy." It is our \ngoal and hopes to unite as womyn to voice
ourselves and incite change \namongst our communities. \n\nFor more
information on future auditions and events, please email us \nalchemywomyn
