cops who were accessories in the murder of Oscar Grant\nDisarming the BART
police, and keeping the BART police out of Oakland\nConvening a public
hearing to investigate the killing\nPress Conference + Speakout at Oakland
City Council\nTuesday, January 20, 2009\n\n5:30PM Press Conference at
Oakland City Hall, 14th + Broadway\n6:00PM City Council Meeting
begins\n\nOakland high school students and community supporters will hold a
press conference and speak out at the Oakland City Council today to demand
justice for Oscar Grant. They will call on the Oakland City Council to pass
a resolution in support of (1) jailing all the cops who were accessories in
the murder of Grant, (2) disarming the BART police, (3) calling on BART
police to stay out of Oakland, and (4) for the Council to convene an
independent public hearing to investigate the killing and make action
recommendations to prevent further killings.\n\n“If the BART police
didn't have guns, then Oscar Grant would be alive today. I don't feel safe
taking BART now knowing what they did to Oscar Grant,” said Tanisha West,
a junior at Oakland Technical High School and organizer with the Coalition
to Defend Affirmative Action, Integration, and Immigrant Rights and Fight
for Equality By Any Means Necessary (BAMN). "Until the BART police stop
carrying guns, I don't think any black student, or anyone for that matter,
is safe from them."\n\nAcross Oakland, high school students are gathering
thousands of petition signatures calling for the above demands.\n\n“The
youth of Oakland want all the cops who were accessories to murder to be
arrested immediately," said Brenda Onofre, a student who is circulating the
petition at Skyline High School. “If black or Latina/o teenagers had held
down a man while he was shot and killed, and then tried to steal people's
cell phones afterward to hide the evidence, they would be in jail right now
and we all know it.”\n\nStudents will also call on the City Council to
convene a public hearing to gather all the evidence available in relation
to Grant's killing. \n\n“It is unacceptable that BART and the District
Attorney are hiding video footage and letting all those other cops go
free,” said Ronald Cruz, Boalt Law School student and BAMN organizer.
“The youth of Oakland are in the line of fire, and so we deserve to know
the entire truth of what those cops did.”\n\nCoalition to Defend
